Once again I realised it had been a while since my last post, I had an idea of what to write but before getting started I thought I’d check today’s prompt:

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

This almost seems too easy! Of course the answer is walking, well I think it’s tied with reading but my blog is about walking so we’ll casually ignore that fact. At one stage I did wonder if writing might rival these hobbies but given my sporadic approach to posting on here I think walking will comfortably retain the crown for a while yet.

I like writing my posts, even though I know only a couple of people will read them, to be honest I think I am mainly writing them for myself anyway. Not just for the fun of tippy-tapping away seeing how many puns or alliterative phrases I can cram into a post but also because these posts act as a useful reminder to my future-self as to why I enjoy walking. That may sound a little coconuts but there are times when the lazier side of myself starts to question why I would leave my cosy abode and in these moments it’s useful for my less-lazy side to be able to draw on these posts to remind lazy-me that I love walking and the benefits justify the effort.

However if you scroll back through my posts you will notice how spaced out they are, at times they appear once a week but sometimes the frequency drops to once a month. This can partly be explained by the simple fact that there are times when life gets in the way, either work is busier and sucks my energy or I’m busy catching-up with friends & family. That being said there have been plenty of times when I could have written more often but just lacked the impetus.

Yesterday it was a gloriously sunny day & surprisingly mild for October. I decided to walk instead of getting the train into town as I wanted to make the most of it. That was my eureka moment as I realised I had inadvertently stumbled upon the reason for the fluctuating frequency of my posts.

I wanted to make the most of it.

In the summer, even our unreliable British ones, the days are generally warm enough to make a walk a tempting suggestion. Once returning home I do not feel inspired to write a post about the lovely walk I’ve just been on. Of course a summer’s walk is a charming pastime, what else have you discovered? That water is wet? Groundbreaking! However as the skies turn greyer, the days get shorter and the winds chillier we often need to be reminded of the benefits of a soothing stroll. It makes no real odds if the reminder comes from outside sources or our past selves but in the colder months we often need an extra nudge to get us out the door & that’s why I think I feel more inspired to write at this time of year.

Of course my theory may be nonsense and I’ll be so busy enjoying leaf-peeping and strolling through the seasons that it will be another month before I post again but hopefully not.

That’s how I stroll.
